Californian gold rush: New biofuels initiatives could cause the ethanol demand in California to surge by up to 75%

On average, three unit trains a week, which are typically 100 linked railcars, lumber in from ethanol production facilities in the midwest to Carson City, California, a key supply hub for ethanol in the US’ single biggest market for the biofuel.
The liquids terminal serves southern California, with 60 rack terminals in the state handling ethanol, most getting their supply trucked in.
Well ahead of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), which was signed into law on 8 August, 2005, requiring the country to progressively increase the renewable fuels consumed from 4 billion gallons in 2006 to 7.5 billion gallons by 2012, with the new goal of 35 billion gallons in 2017 outlined by President Bush in his 2007 State of the Union address, California was blending ethanol.
