Europe begins the biofuels race

31st January, 2007

Biofuels have slowly become part of the landscape in Europe- not only in the countryside as fields have been turned to produce biofuel feedstock - but also at filling station forecourts where drivers are voting with their feet for greener fuel. But is greener fuel in Europe the answer to pollution? Acceptance is built on the perception of a 60 to 70% saving in greenhouse gas emissions, while biofuels also offer a lifebelt for Europe’s farmers, creating a new market for a new breed of non-food crops.

Gradually European countries and energy companies alike are waking up to a desire to join the international race to develop viable biofuels businesses for the future which many believe could eventually rival fossil fuels.
Climate change, and the appeal of being seen to be green, has helped to encourage energy companies and governments alike to get on the biofuels bandwagon that is now rolling through Europe. Government support evidenced by legislation, tax incentives and history are three of the strongest reasons for separating out the leaders in the European biofuels race. Vegetable oilderived biofuels or vegetable oil methyl esters (Vome) have enjoyed tax breaks throughout Europe to varying degrees providing one of the strongest incentives for manufacturers.
