Biofuels show gets more than it bargained for

12th November, 2007

For the second year running, the Biodiesel- Expo was held in October in the north of the UK. It is one of Europe's largest events, and targets both biofuels industry members as well as individuals wanting to learn and become part of the sector.

The conference kicked off on 17 October with a keynote address from Oliver Mace, from BP Biofuels. Mace began by informing the conference of BP's Energy Bioscience Institute, a 10 year $500 million (€348 million) project to 'inject some urgency in order to understand the technology needed for energy produced based on biomass'.

He then went on to cover aspects of the biofuels value chain. Just as he began speaking of the raging debate over sustainability and confused public opinion, a group of half a dozen people calmly approached the stage and began demonstrating about the food versus fuel debate. A young woman thrust a cream pie into a stunned Mace's face, and another padlocked himself to the conference podium.
