Green growth
16th January, 2008
China Clean Energy, through its whollyowned subsidiary, Fujian Zhongde Technology is a rapidly growing biodiesel producer.
The company entered the biodiesel market in 2005 as a result of strong governmental support and increasing market demand. The fast pace of economic growth in recent years has turned China into the second-largest energy user in the world. According to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) China’s total energy consumption in 2004 was 1,970 mtce (million tonnes of coal equivalent), representing 13% of the total energy consumed worldwide.
Not only is it one of the largest energy users, it is also the biggest developing country in the world, and with oil prices continually rising, and some coastal cities reporting shortages, the potential for biodiesel manufacturers in China is huge, especially as China currently imports the majority of its oil.
According to forecasts from the National Bureau of Statistics, China’s dependency on imported petrol oil will exceed 60% this year, higher even than the US’ dependency level of 58%. The annual consumption of biodiesel in China is around 70 million tonnes, a third of which comes from imports. As such, any fuel produced domestically will be welcomed.
