Feature: The need for change
Since the start of the year there has been a structural shift in the dynamics of the global ethanol market. Brazil has temporarily withdrawn from the export market, while the US, which as recently as 2006 was the largest importer of ethanol, is now an exporter and supplying many of the markets traditionally supplied by Brazil. While the new Czarnikow Sugar Brazil crop is expected to reach record levels, US ethanol remains competitive around the world. Consequently, the course of the US ethanol market between now and the end of the year will have a major impact on global trade and prices. In recent months the ethanol market has been on a rollercoaster ride. In the final months of 2009 the US ethanol industry experienced the best market conditions since the middle of the last decade, aided by firm petrol prices which boosted discretionary demand and a slow-down in capacity growth. These factors, combined with a rapid decline in imports allowed values to rise to a one–year high. As ethanol prices picked up they decoupled from the corn market with which they had historically been closely correlated, providing a major boost to producers as operating margins grew impressively.
